Lang Dulay as an Epitome of An Empowered Woman

Updated: May 19, 2021

Lang Dulay, a Dreamweaver from Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, is one epitome of our beautiful, rich, and historical culture. She's a recipient of the National Living Treasure Award for her contribution to preserving and promoting T'boli's fine and outstanding tradition of weaving T'nalak, a dyed fabric crafted through abaca fiber. T'nalak weaving and clothing represent both Lang Dulay's tribe and the Philippines' diverse culture.

Lang Dulay is an inspiration to everyone most especially, to women. There are other female artists in the Gawad ng Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) but, Lang Dulay inspires me the most. Women are often looked down on or discredited by people just because they are women. People think that women cannot do greater things due to the established norms, stereotypes, and standards over time on women. However, Lang Dulay proved to everyone we are not "just" women, we are women, and we can become whoever we want to as long as we pour our genuine heart into everything we do. In a male-dominated industry, women can rise, make and leave an impact.

Lang Dulay is not just an artist but also an embodiment of an empowered woman.

Lang Dulay treats her works as if her life and her tribe depend on them. She is very particular with the details of her weaving, and I admire her for that. Dulay dedicates her passion and heart to her craft, intending to showcase her tribe's skills, talents, and determination.

I want to be like Lang Dulay, an empowered, dedicated, and wise woman of her craft and life. She inspires me to explore and find my purpose to be able to contribute to the preservation and promotion of our country's culture and identity.

I hope our country will continue to promote, recognize, and appreciate our national artists. Give them more platforms and opportunities to showcase their talents and skills. Allow them to introduce our country more and let us be their biggest support system.
